About Domestic Violence:
Domestic Violence is a pattern of coercive and controlling behaviors used to gain power and control over another person.  Abuse can be verbal, emotional, physical or sexual. Domestic violence is not an isolated event, but a series of controlling and manipulative behaviors used to control the victim. Domestic violence usually escalates over time and can result in serious injury or death. When learning about the many circumstances that force individuals to remain in abusive relationships it is crucial that we stop asking “Why Someone Stays” and begin asking “Why Batterers Abuse their partners." We also need to ask, “Why we as a society do not do all that we can to raise awareness.” We must educate ourselves and stop passing judgement. We must stop ignoring the fact that battering is a crime.

Statistics on Domestic Violence:

  • 1 out of 4 American women are physically abused in their lifetime. Over three million children witness domestic violence.
  • Every 12 seconds a women is battered in the United States by an intimate partner.
  • In this country an average of 4 women are murdered by an intimate partner each day.
  • Domestic violence is the leading cause of serious injury to American women between the ages of 15 and 44. More common than automobile accidents, muggings and rapes combined.
  • 82% of Americans say they would help stop the violence if they knew what to do.
