In America we elect Congress to write laws to govern us. Those laws are based on information, either good information or misinformation, either truth or lies. Congress looks to constituents (you and me) for much of its information. If godly men and women are not speaking out on relevant issues of the day, only the godless will be heard!

Jesus said that Christians are the “light of the world” and the “salt of the Earth.” Why don’t we shed more of that light on Congress and season it with truth?

Jesus also said: “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.” Our elected officials MUST hear those words so that we may live. Apparently many in Congress are not reading their Bibles so we must let them hear the truth as it relates to pertinent issues.

Laws affect our freedoms, our economy, our morality, nearly every facet of American life. As citizens we have a surprising ability to affect the law by engaging our accountable, elected officials with Christian convictions and with truth. It’s not necessary to be an expert on every issue we discuss. However, it is important to let our congressman know how we feel about issues that we embrace. We can affect the laws by:

  • Staying Informed (There are lots of reliable, Christian information sources.)
  • Voting (Regardless of party affiliation, make an informed vote!)
  • Corresponding (Have the Capital Hill switchboard on speed dial and your congressman’s email in your address book.)

Historically, Christians are largely responsible for persuading governments to establish the following: abolishment of slavery, racism, child labor, infanticide, child marriage, temple prostitution, child sexual abuse, child prostitution, and treatment of wives as property; and establishing fair treatment of prisoners, and equality of mankind.

We must also engage our culture in the marketplace, and the marketplace of ideas:

  • Send an email to TV sponsors of lewd programming – easy!
  • Speak to a store manager about display of risqué magazines – about 3 min.
  • Write a letter to the editor of your local paper on an issue you care about.
  • Boycott products of companies who support godless activities or policies.

Charles Finney, revivalist preacher during America’s Second Great Awakening said it best: “The church must take right ground in regard to politics… God cannot sustain this free and blessed country, which we love and pray for, unless the church will take right ground. Politics are a part of religion in such a country as this, and Christians must do their duty to the country as a part of their duty to God… And he will bless or curse this nation, according to the course they take.”

Don’t remain silent; be a world-changer and engage your culture for Christ.
